Spring Cleaning For Your Mind, Body, & Spirit

Spring is Here in Boston!

Or at least, technically it is…we’re hoping the weather gets the memo sooner rather than later. Even though the feeling might not quite be there yet, we’re starting to catch the spring cleaning bug. And we’re not talking just spring cleaning for your living space, it’s for your body, mind, and spirit, too! Just like the weather, our bodies have a desire to lighten up come springtime. Our bodies begin to crave lightness – like sunshine, a fresh breeze and lighter foods like greens, juices (heeyyy), and in-season fruits & veggies. After a winter loaded with soups, hot bevs, and grounding foods, the body is ready to shake out some of that heaviness and to get out and dance in the new spring sunshine.

Wondering how to support your body during this seasonal transition into spring? we’ve got you. We’re going to dive into the lifestyle shifts, self-care habits, and foods that you can focus on to have the best Spring ever.

It’s a Lifestyle

Ahh, yes, “Spring Cleaning”. Not the most appealing term, with that word “cleaning,” in there. So, let’s call it, “a lifestyle shift”…that sounds a bit more appealing, right? Plus, it’s more sustainable for us to keep up in the long run. This is all about flowing with the changing of the seasons and shifting our lifestyles accordingly so that we can feel better. After all of the hunkering down we did in the wicked cold Boston winter, we’re starting to feel ready to shed some layers and let go of some of that heavy energy.

One great way to lighten our load is to do a digital detox. Set aside some time to mark all of those piled-up emails as, “read.” (and maybe unsubscribe from some of those companies you gave your email to just to get a discount code that one time.) A digital detox can also look like using your electronics less. A great way to do this is to set time limits on app usage, so that your phone alerts you that time’s up after your allotted 1-hour of TikTok scrolling.

Another idea for a spring lifestyle shift is to get the heck outside. I know, after all of those freezing commutes on the T, it can be intimidating to spend a long period of time out there but the sun is ready to give you all of that good ‘ole Vitamin D to reduce feelings of stress, depression, and anxiety. Along those same lines, incorporating a new stress relieving practice to your lifestyle could be the key to a super springy spring. Try out a new yoga class, practice deep breathing, or attempt a 5-minute meditation. What works for one person may absolutely NOT be the vibe for another. So, find what works for you!

Self-Care is the new Spring-Clean

Spring is a great time to take a look at our self-care practices and give them some sprucing! Is there a self-care practice that’s been stressing you out more than it’s been helping? Is there something you’ve always wanted to start doing for yourself, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet? How about that one thing you used to do that really helped, but you fell off from it?  Now’s the perfect time to freshen it all up. Some of my favorite self-care practices are dry brushing, journaling, keeping track of the amount of water I’m drinking, and practicing good sleep hygiene.

Self-care doesn’t have to look like bubble baths and face masks. (If it does look like that for you, awesome!) But it can also look like setting boundaries, making your bed in the morning, keeping up with the laundry, etc. Define what true self-care means for you, and go from there!

Foods To Put that Spring Back in Your Step

Remember all winter when you craved things like roasted sweet potatoes, squashes and warming spices like nutmeg, clove and cumin? You might notice yourself starting to reach away from those foods when you’re shopping and starting to reach for lighter foods! Our bodies do this on purpose! Eating as in-season as possible is a great way to support our bodies. Some springy foods even help to relieve allergies…the Earth is so cool.
